virgin islands boa“...a jeweler opened the doors of his waterfront store located in downtown Charlotte Amalie, the duty-free shopping mecca of the Caribbean. Thousands of visitors flock to these quaint, historic streets to gather up their duty-free treasures and this day was to be no exception. He flicked on the lights of the jewelry cases filled with sparkling jems and golds of all colors. ‘What’s this?’ he said stepping back hurriedly. There, in the largest and sparkliest case of them all, curled up and peacefully sleeping in the bottom was a three foot-long, harmless, extremely rare and endangered Virgin Islands tree boa. One cannot imagine how that creature found its way in there! It’s route to this warm spot took him all the way from the extreme East End of St. Thomas, over mountains, down hills and finally across busy streets, brimming with taxis and pedestrians. Maybe it was courting season and he needed a special treat to tantalize his mate? Mercifully, the enlightened store owner called the Virgin Islands National Park Service who came quickly to remove this visitor to a more appropriate location. We are sure all creatures concerned were relieved...”
(By the way, there are no poisonous snakes on any of the Virgin Islands.)

FROGS AND LOCUSTS??
Announcement!! It is steamy September in these lovely islands. So, far Mother Nature has been very kind to us and so far sent all her furious Storm energy out to sea where it might only disturb Mr. Blenny and his other fishy friends. Sorry, Blenny.

The weather gurus have advanced all sorts of reason for this:
1) El Nino has been spotted!! This Eastern Pacific ocean warming has produced higher than normal wind shear in the Atlantic (ask Blenny how this works as I do not really know!)

2) Some might remember reading in "Ripley's Believe It or Not" about the time that it 'rained' locusts and frogs on some of these Caribbean islands. I'm not making this up!  Well, we haven't yet been treated to this surprise--which we are now told contains camel dung (Yuk!), but we have had a larger than usual number of dusty and hazy days throughout this summer.  This simply doesn't happen here when summer ends for which we are grateful.

I have seen this reddish dust coat the rigging and decks of my sailboat to the depth of about 1/4 inch!! Tho' some would say, "What a mess!", we here in de eyelands, mon, say, "BRING IT ON!" This dust, traveling on the highest level winds, arrives to our islands all the way from the African Sahara desert after each one of this year's numerous dust storms. On it's journey east, the dust cloud lowers the temperature of the ocean waters and dries out the air, further inhibiting the possible formation of storms. Additionally, some might be aware of the constant rumbling of the volcano on Monserrat to our South and East. We also get the grey dust from that. So, bring out the Pledge and celebrate!!

BOAT SHOWS:
In about 6 weeks, I will be attending our two large charteryacht shows here in these lovely islands. Here, I will meet the new and re-meet the foreknown charteryachts and their crews. The majority have spent the summer spiffing up their boats until they gleam even more than usual. Many have refitted, inside and out. Some have added new chefs and new water toys.
This is my time to look, ask, smile and plan for your dream vacation!! Get 'em early, they'll be busy soon!!
